At a meeting with the GCA last week in London, there was a concern raised that insufficient numbers of UK Grocery suppliers are adequately trained in GSCOP regulation. A UK government survey showed that over 50% of suppliers, particularly smaller ones, hadn’t received GSCOP training. This suggests that a substantial portion of suppliers are unaware of how to access training.

Why is training vital for your account teams if you supply the UK’s largest retailers?

GSCOP’s purpose is: to protect suppliers from unfair treatment by major supermarkets.

While supermarkets are legally required to train their buyers on GSCOP annually, a large percentage of suppliers have not received similar training.

Not knowing GSCOP means suppliers may not be aware of their legal rights and could be at a commercial disadvantage. Suppliers cite not knowing where to find training or fearing retribution from retailers as reasons for not pursuing it. The Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA) continues to gather feedback from suppliers and highlights the need for suppliers to be skilled in handling and spotting potential issues.
