The Grocer magazine recently featured an interesting article on GSCOP (Grocery Supplies Code of Practice) compliance and the challenge this presents to the GCA (Groceries Code Adjudicator), notably in relation to Amazon.
The GCA is fully aware of the current compliance issues, with recent statements expressing his concern, particularly concerning its treatment of suppliers. GCA Mark White stated: “I will not hesitate to launch a formal investigation if appropriate and necessary to ensure Amazon is treating its suppliers fairly and lawfully”.
The GCA 2024 Survey confirmed that “Many suppliers do not believe that Amazon is complying with the Code.” The GCA reflected that he is “concerned about Amazon’s overall Code compliance score. Less than half (47%) of suppliers perceived that Amazon mostly or completely follows the Code; down from 59% in 2023″. Mark has consistently encouraged suppliers to continue to tell him confidentially about the issues they are facing.
Following the 2024 Survey, the GCA has warned Amazon to take “swift action” and has threatened a formal investigation if Amazon fails to improve its compliance. It will be interesting to see how this situation develops and the soon-to-be-released results of the 2025 supplier survey will be ones to watch.
